National Ice Tea Day (Hibiscus Spice Blend)
by Crystal Stokes
There is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold cup of tea on a hot summers day. Iced tea is so versatile. You can add fresh fruit, sugar, honey, maple syrup, boba, herbs and so much more! Here at Frank Communitea we love to experiment with our blends and we want to share some of our favorite iced tea recipes with you! This week we are highlighting our Hibiscus Spice blend this has been a favorite of our tea club members and long time customers. It's tangy and little spicy on it's own and once you add sweetener it is umami.
Hibiscus Spice Hot Brewed Iced Tea:
One method we like to use is the hot brew method. This is how most lovers of good old southern sweetened iced tea make theirs. This method is quicker than making cold brew but can become bitter if left steeping too long. The tea is brewed using hot water then cooled down for 30 minutes to a few hours in the refrigerator.
It is important to make your Yaupon and herbal teas concentrated but not bitter. We suggest two tablespoons of tea per 8 ounces of water.
Steps:
Add 2 tbs of tea to every 8 ounces of water you use
Steep according to the instructions on your package.
Once the steeping is complete add your sweetener of choice (I like to use brown sugar in this one). Be sure to allow your brewed tea container to cool at room temp before placing in the fridge for at least 30mins to an hour.
Once your tea is brewed and refrigerated, pour the tea over ice and add some slices of orange. Add a fresh herb or two if you can. Enjoy!
